The Short Answer

Reading Xero is free and safe. Writing to it is a project.

Yes, and the easy way only reads. Xero's connector in Claude, live since 12 May 2026, is free with any Xero business plan and any Claude account. It answers questions about profit and loss, cash, invoices, bills and who owes you, for one organisation at a time. Xero's plugin in ChatGPT, live since 16 September 2026, reads only too.

Neither can change anything in your books. On a paid Claude plan, Claude for Small Business adds ready-made Xero workflows, such as chasing overdue invoices or preparing month-end, which prepare the work for a person to approve.

Changing Xero takes the developer route. Xero's hosted MCP server, generally available since 14 October 2026, has 39 tools, and 21 of them write: invoices, payments, bank transactions and manual journals, including approving and voiding invoices. It does not ask before it writes, it needs a Xero developer app on the A$35-a-month Core plan plus GST, and its changes appear in Xero's history as "System Generated", not as the person who asked.

MYOB's connector for Claude and ChatGPT reads only, is in beta, and has been rolling out since August 2026 to Business Pro, Lite and AccountRight once the business owner allows it. QuickBooks' connectors are for US customers only.

The safe order: read-only first, a written list of what may change, a person's yes before anything touches a payment or a ledger, and a record of what the AI was asked. Tax and BAS agents also need each client's permission first, under the Tax Practitioners Board's guidance of July 2026.

How to Do It

Seven steps to connect AI to your books without risking them.

  1. 01

    Start with Xero's connector, read-only.

Add Xero from Claude's connector directory, sign in with your Xero login and choose the organisation. No developer set-up, and nothing can change.

  2. 02

Use a business plan for business data.

Claude Team and ChatGPT Business keep chats out of model training by default. On a personal plan, switch training off before you ask about your books.

  3. 03

Check the numbers before you rely on them.

The Claude connector reads Xero Analytics, which can lag behind the ledger, and sums over many invoices can go quietly wrong. Spot-check against Xero's own reports.

  4. 04

Decide what may change, in writing.

Drafts only at first, such as a draft invoice or bill for a person to approve. Payments, bank transactions and journals wait.

  5. 05

Limit it with scopes, not trust.

On Xero's hosted server an agent can only call tools whose scopes your app approved. Read-only has to come from the scopes, because connecting needs Standard access or above.

  6. 06

Put a yes before every write, and keep a log.

Xero's hosted server does not ask before writing, and Xero logs the API call, not the request behind it. Record who asked for what, and what changed.

  7. 07

Get permission before client data goes in.

Tax and BAS agents need each client's permission first. Any business the Privacy Act covers answers for personal information it sends to a US provider.

In short

Questions and summaries are ready today and cost nothing. Anything that writes needs the approvals designed before the connection, not after.

Who Does This

Who connects AI to accounting software in Australia, and what to ask them.

  1. 01

Which connection, and why that one.

Xero's own connector is free and read-only. Anything that writes should come with a reason it needs to.

  2. 02

Which scopes it holds, and who approved them.

The scopes decide what the AI can touch. Ask for the list, and for read-only wherever the job allows it.

  3. 03

What happens before anything is written.

A draft, a person's yes, then the change. Xero's hosted server will not ask on its own.

  4. 04

Where the record of each request is kept.

Xero logs the API call, not the request behind it, so the connection needs a log of its own.

  5. 05

    Whose permission covers the data.

Your clients' if you are a tax or BAS agent, and your privacy policy if personal information goes overseas.

  6. 06

    We do.

Croissant & Baguette is a small studio with a network of Australian specialists. We connect AI assistants to the software a business already runs, and build connectors that do only what a process needs, with each change approved before it is written.

    Built in Australia, never offshored.

from $8,000 typically $10–30k

from $1,500 custom connectors typically $3–8k
Managed monitoring, fixes, monthly report · changes quoted
from $250/month

What moves a connection within those ranges:

  • whether the job can stay read-only
  • how many organisations or client files it covers
  • which records it may write, and who approves each change
  • the log each request and change leaves behind
  • whether the software already has a connector

Why the approvals cost more than the connection

Because connecting is the easy part, and Xero's own connector takes minutes. The work is deciding what an AI may write to your books, putting a person's yes in front of it, and keeping the record an accountant would ask for. Done once and properly, it saves hours every week; done casually, it leaves a ledger nobody can explain.

Indicative. Fixed price after the free assessment. Xero, MYOB, Claude and ChatGPT subscriptions are paid to them, not to us.

Fair Questions

Ask away.

Eight things people ask about AI and their accounting software. Still one missing? Ask us.

Is there a Xero MCP server?

Three. Xero hosts the connector behind Claude's Xero listing, which only reads. Xero's Remote MCP for developers, generally available since 14 October 2026, has 39 tools, 21 of which write, and needs a developer app on the A$35-a-month Core plan. And Xero's open-source server runs on your own computer through a A$10-a-month custom connection, with 51 tools and no read-only switch.

Can Claude make changes in Xero?

Not through Xero's connector in Claude, which is read-only. Through Xero's developer MCP server it can create, approve and void invoices, record payments and bank transactions, and post manual journals, without asking first unless the app around it asks. Xero's own advice is to have the agent confirm with you before writing anything back, and to test against the demo organisation first.

Does Xero work with ChatGPT?

Yes, read-only. Xero's plugin in ChatGPT went live on 16 September 2026 and covers profit and loss, cash, outstanding invoices and top customers; whether you can install it depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace. Xero has also connected Google Gemini, where any change to financial data, such as issuing an invoice, needs your explicit confirmation before it runs.

Does MYOB connect to Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes, read-only and in beta. MYOB's connector needs Business Pro, Lite or AccountRight and your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription, and the business owner must allow it in My Account first. It covers profit and loss, sales, receivables, payables and cash, but not payroll, inventory, jobs or lodgement. MYOB launched its own AI, Iris, on 19 October 2026.

What is Xero JAX?

Xero's own AI, built into Xero. JAX chat is available to every subscriber at no extra charge for now, and on Grow and above it categorises and matches bank transactions it is confident about. Xero announced a partnership with Anthropic in March 2026, and Xero says its connectors for Claude and ChatGPT run on the same foundations as JAX.

Is it safe to connect Xero to Claude?

Read-only, on a business plan, the risk is low: the connector cannot change anything, Xero says connector data is not used to train Claude, and Claude Team keeps chats out of training by default. Writing is where the risk sits. Changes made through the API show in Xero's history as System Generated, and Xero logs the call, not the request behind it.

Can a bookkeeper use Claude with client files?

Yes, with each client's permission. The Tax Practitioners Board's guidance of 22 July 2026 says registered tax and BAS agents must get a client's permission before their information goes into an AI tool, depending on how the tool is set up, and must check what it produces. Tax file numbers carry extra rules, and Xero's connector reads one organisation at a time.

Does QuickBooks connect to Claude in Australia?

Not yet. Intuit's QuickBooks connectors for Claude and ChatGPT are for US customers only, and Australian subscribers who try are told the app is not available in their country. Intuit also publishes an open-source server you run yourself, but does not say whether it works with Australian companies. Xero and MYOB are the two with connectors that work here today.
