Is a headless Shopify storefront better than a standard Shopify theme?

Better at some things, and not for every store. Headless wins on speed, layout freedom and content around the products; a theme wins on time to launch, cost and keeping everything in one admin. Here is which store wants which, the cheaper ways to a faster theme, one real headless store itemised, and what to ask whoever builds yours.

The Short Answer

Better at some things. Not better for every store.

A headless Shopify storefront is better than a standard theme at three things: speed, because the pages are built ahead of time and served from a CDN instead of assembled by Shopify on every visit; layout, because no theme decides what a collection page can look like or how search and filtering behave; and content, because articles, guides and landing pages live in a proper CMS beside the products instead of inside Shopify's blog. A theme is better at three other things: time to launch, three to six weeks against six to ten; cost, from a free theme to $16,000 for a custom one, against $15,000 to $35,000 for headless; and one admin, where your team edits the storefront where it manages orders, with the app store a click away. Brand-led stores, large or content-heavy catalogues and stores that need a quiz, a configurator or filtering nobody's theme does want headless. A small range with a launch date in weeks and a team that lives in Shopify admin wants a theme, built properly. Both keep Shopify's checkout, and you can start with one and move to the other without touching the shop underneath.

Our verdict

Go headless when you want freedom: any layout, search and filtering built your way, content around the products, sub-second pages. Pick a theme when launching in weeks inside Shopify admin matters more. We build both, and on the first call we will say which.

Pick a Theme

When a theme is the right call.

  1. 01

The date matters more than the design.

A first drop booked for next month, a season to catch. A custom theme is live in three to six weeks and a bought one in days; headless is six to ten weeks before anyone buys anything.

  2. 02

Your team lives in Shopify admin.

One login, one editor, one place for orders, products and pages. Headless puts content in a CMS, which is better for content and one more thing to learn.

  3. 03

The design fits inside what themes do.

A homepage, collections, product pages, a cart and a few landing pages. Constellation Brands runs ten brands across Australia and New Zealand on one theme, every section editable by their team.

  4. 04

The catalogue is small and the content is thin.

Forty products and no editorial to speak of gets nothing from a CMS beside the shop. Spend the difference on photography.

Go Headless

When headless pays for itself.

  1. 01

Speed is the brand, or the catalogue is big.

Themes go slow first on the collection pages people shop from. POP Local's took up to twenty seconds on the old build and load in under a second now, across 10,000 products from 343 makers.

  2. 02

The theme has become the ceiling.

A quiz that builds a kit and goes straight to checkout, chromeless pages for ad traffic, a landing page in an afternoon. Quitine outgrew its theme on that list and has seen double-digit sales growth since.

  3. 03

There is a lot of content around the products.

Guides, articles, a magazine. Shopify's blog was never built for that; a CMS with live preview was. Quitine moved 177 articles into Sanity with every old address redirected.

  4. 04

The store is one part of a bigger site.

A brand with services, a directory or a community where the shop is a section rather than the whole. Headless lets the store share the site's design and the site share the store's cart.

Every store above keeps Shopify's checkout, payments, inventory and orders. Headless replaces the storefront, never the shop.

Alternatives

The engines that answer this question name the same handful of alternatives to a slow theme. Here they are, with what each costs in September 2026, cheapest first.

Faster without going headless.
CostWhat it isWhat it gets you
Cost $0 Shopify's own free themes What it is Dawn and the free themes built on it: lean, fast, and updated by Shopify itself. Most stores would load faster on a tidy Dawn with three apps than on the theme they paid for with twelve. What it gets you The quickest speed win on Shopify, and an honest baseline. If your store is slower than Dawn, the theme or the apps are why.
Cost US$100–500, once A premium theme What it is Paid themes on the Shopify Theme Store sit between about US$100 and US$500. Out of the Sandbox, the vendor the engines name most, sells Turbo for US$425 and Flex for US$495, both built for speed and sections. What it gets you A better-looking, still-fast store in a week, if the design fits inside what the theme does. Bought once; the vendor ships the updates.
Cost from $2,000 An app audit and a speed pass OursWhat it is Somebody lists every app, removes the ones not earning their place, rebuilds what they did into the theme, resizes the images, defers the scripts that can wait, and measures it before and after. What it gets you A theme store from four seconds to under two without changing platform. Cost a build, hosting included Hydrogen on Oxygen What it is Shopify's own headless framework, built on React, with Oxygen, Shopify's hosting for it, included with Shopify plans. Headless without a second host or a second bill, still a custom build. What it gets you The headless route for teams who want to stay inside Shopify's world. The build costs the same as any headless storefront; the hosting costs nothing extra.
Cost $15,000–35,000 A headless storefront on any framework Ours · headlessWhat it is SvelteKit or Next.js on Cloudflare, the Shopify Storefront API for products, cart and checkout, a CMS such as Sanity for content. The Receipt

One real headless store, and what the money bought.

Made Quiet makes premium Australian sports caps. There was a name, a range, a first drop booked for February, and no store. Six working days after the first commit there was a headless storefront on Shopify checkout with its own cart, Sanity for content, Klaviyo and reviews, and no theme anywhere in it. The first sale came in the first week; a third of the people who arrive buy something; seven months in, the total is closing on six figures. That is what the freedom column of the table above costs, and what it did.

Who Builds Them

Who builds headless Shopify in Australia, and what to ask.

  1. 01

    What stays in Shopify admin.

Products, inventory, orders, discounts, customers and checkout should. If the builder wants to move any of those out of Shopify, ask why; that is where headless projects go wrong.

  2. 02

Who edits the content, and where.

Ask to see a landing page made and published without a developer. On a good headless build that is a CMS with live preview; on a bad one it is a ticket to the agency.

  3. 03

A live store and its product-page number.

Open a collection page and a product page on your phone on mobile data, and ask for the PageSpeed Insights mobile result for the same pages. Under a second is the point of headless.

  4. 04

    Migration and redirects.

Every old product and collection address mapped to a new one before launch, so the rankings survive the move. Quitine's 177 articles and POP Local's 6,000 product URLs all still land somewhere.

  5. 05

    Who owns the code.

Your repository, your Cloudflare or Vercel account, your Sanity project, your Shopify store, and code another developer could pick up. Otherwise it is a theme's lock-in at a headless price.

  6. 06

    We do.

Croissant & Baguette is a small Sydney studio with a network of Australian specialists. Built in Sydney, never offshored. POP Local, Made Quiet and Quitine are our headless stores, Constellation Brands is our theme, and the first thing we tell you on the call is which one you need.

Our Price List

What we charge.

Our Price List
Headless storefront Shopify checkout, storefront built by us
from $15,000 typically $18–35k
Custom Shopify theme built from a clean base, not a marketplace theme
from $9,000 typically $9–16k
Care plan monitoring, updates, small changes, monthly performance snapshot
from $250/month

Why the recommendation is honest

Because we build both, so the answer on the call is not a pitch for the dearer one. A small range with a launch date gets a theme from a clean base; a brand-led store, a big catalogue or content around the products gets headless. Either way the checkout stays Shopify's, and you can move from one to the other later.

Fixed quote after a scoping call. Shopify's subscription and card fees are yours and go to Shopify; they are not part of what we charge.

Fair Questions

Ask away.

Nine things people ask before they choose. Still one missing? Ask us.

Is a headless Shopify storefront better than a standard Shopify theme?

Better at speed, layout freedom and content, and worse at time to launch, cost and keeping everything in one admin. Headless pre-renders the storefront and serves it from a CDN, so pages load in under a second and no theme limits apply. A theme launches in three to six weeks instead of six to ten and costs from nothing to $16,000 instead of $15,000 to $35,000. Brand-led stores and big or content-heavy catalogues want headless; small ranges with a launch date want a theme. Both keep Shopify's checkout.

Who can build a Shopify store with a headless storefront?

Studios that build on a modern framework against the Shopify Storefront API, a smaller share of Shopify developers than the ones who customise themes. We are one: a small Sydney studio with a network of Australian specialists, and POP Local, Made Quiet and Quitine are ours. Whoever you ask, apply the checklist above: what stays in Shopify admin, who edits the content, a live product page on your phone, the redirect plan, and who owns the code.

What's an alternative to standard Shopify themes for a faster storefront?

In order of cost: a tidy store on Dawn, Shopify's own free theme, with the app stack cut back; a premium theme built for speed such as Out of the Sandbox's Turbo or Flex at US$425 to $495; an app audit and speed pass on the theme you have, from $2,000 with us; Hydrogen on Oxygen, Shopify's own headless framework with its hosting included; or a headless storefront on any framework at $15,000 to $35,000. Only the last two get under a second.

What should I expect to pay for a headless Shopify storefront?

From $15,000 with us, typically $18,000 to $35,000, which is where Australian studios sit in 2026. The build bands, Shopify's own fees and the app bill are itemised in our <a href="/guides/how-much-does-a-shopify-store-cost-in-australia/">Shopify cost guide</a>.

Is headless ecommerce worth it?

For some stores, clearly. POP Local went from twenty-second category pages to under a second across 10,000 products; Quitine has seen double-digit sales growth since leaving its theme; Made Quiet converts a third of its visitors on a store built in six days. For a small range with a launch date and a team in Shopify admin, no: a theme built properly does it for less and sooner. Ask whether speed, layout or content is costing you sales today.

Which headless commerce platform is the best?

For the shop itself, Shopify, for almost every store below enterprise: checkout, payments, fraud, tax and shipping at a scale you cannot build. For the storefront on top, the framework matters less than the people building it; Hydrogen, Next.js, SvelteKit and Astro can all be fast. We build on SvelteKit and Cloudflare with Sanity for content, and have built on BigCommerce and on Stripe and Square when the shop called for it.

Can we start with a theme and go headless later?

Yes, and it is a sensible order for a new store. Products, orders, customers, discounts and checkout stay exactly where they are in Shopify. Headless replaces the storefront, not the shop, so the move is a new front on the same building, with every old address redirected.

Do Shopify apps work with headless?

The ones that work in checkout and the back office do: payments, shipping, tax, subscriptions, reviews and email through their APIs. The ones that inject themselves into the theme, page builders, pop-ups and upsell widgets, do not, and that is half the point: what they did gets built into the storefront once, without a script on every page. Made Quiet runs Klaviyo and Judge.me headless.

Does headless hurt SEO?

Not when it is built properly, and it usually helps. The storefront is pre-rendered, so search engines and the AI crawlers get complete HTML with product structured data, clean URLs and fast pages, which is what Google Shopping and AI shopping answers reward. Where headless hurts is a build that renders in the browser and forgets the redirects. Ask for the redirect map and a crawl of a live store before you sign.
