What PayPal, Stripe, Square, Shopify Payments and four more providers take from a payment in AUD, what reaches you, and what a month costs your store. Free.

## What will PayPal, Stripe or Shopify take?

Put in a payment to see what each of nine providers keeps at its Australian rate, what reaches your account, and the price that leaves you the whole amount once the fee is taken. Under it, price a month for your store: your plan, your card mix, your apps.

Worked example: one payment of $100. On an Australian card the providers below keep $1.75 to $3.20 of it, and on a card issued overseas $3.55 to $4.20.

| Payments by | Australian card | Fee on $100 | Overseas card | Fee on $100, overseas card | To keep $100, charge (Australian card) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| eway Online Payments | 1.5% + 25c | $1.75 | 3.49% + 25c | $3.74 | $101.78 |
| PayPal card payments (with PayPal's approval) | 1.5% + 30c | $1.80 | 3.6% + 30c | $3.90 | $101.83 |
| Pin Payments | 1.6% + 30c | $1.90 | 3.4% + 30c | $3.70 | $101.94 |
| Airwallex | 1.65% + 30c | $1.95 | 3.45% + 30c | $3.75 | $101.99 |
| Stripe | 1.65% + 30c | $1.95 | 3.5% + 30c | $3.80 | $101.99 |
| Shopify Payments (Basic plan) | 1.7% + 30c | $2.00 | 3.5% + 30c | $3.80 | $102.04 |
| WooPayments | 1.75% + 30c | $2.05 | 3.25% + 30c | $3.55 | $102.09 |
| Square Online | 2.2% | $2.20 | 3.7% | $3.70 | $102.25 |
| PayPal Checkout | 2.9% + 30c | $3.20 | 3.9% + 30c | $4.20 | $103.30 |

You can't add these fees on top as a surcharge any more: eftpos, Mastercard, Visa, American Express and PayPal have all banned it since early October 2026. The last column is what is still allowed, a price with the fee already in it, the same for every customer however they pay. [What the ban changed](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/payment-fees-in-australia/#ban).

Each provider's standard online rate in Australia, read on its own pricing page on 11 October 2026 and worked to the cent. Shopify Payments is priced on the Basic plan. On Shopify, paying through anyone else also costs Shopify's own fee, 2% of the order on Basic, which the month below adds. For PayPal, overseas means a buyer outside Australia. Currency conversion, disputes and refunds are not counted.

## What a month costs your store.

Your platform and plan, how you take payments, how many orders and how big, how many customers pay with Amex or an overseas card, and what your apps cost. The bill updates as you type, and underneath, every provider your platform allows is priced on the same month.

Worked example: 200 orders a month at $80 on Shopify Basic billed monthly, 10% of orders on overseas cards, 5% on American Express and $60 a month of apps. With Shopify Payments, the month comes to $486 ($5,837 a year), and payments take 2.31% of sales.

| Payments by | Card fees | Shopify's extra fee | Payments a month | Share of sales |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Shopify Payments | $370 | $0 | $370 | 2.31% |
| eway Online Payments | $322 | $320 | $642 | 4.01% |
| PayPal Checkout | $540 | $320 | $860 | 5.38% |

Plan prices are before GST: Shopify adds 10% to them unless your business is GST-registered and its ABN sits on the account. Card rates are as each provider publishes them. On Shopify the only providers allowed beside Shopify Payments are PayPal and eway, and both pay Shopify's extra fee.

Platform and card fees only, at the rates published on 11 October 2026. Not counted: chargebacks, currency conversion, refunds and sales in person.

## Plain sums, published rates.

- **Rates from each provider's own page.** Every percentage, fixed fee and plan price comes from Shopify's or the provider's Australian pricing page, read on 11 October 2026 and read again each quarter.
- **Your card mix, not the advertised rate.** A card issued overseas costs about twice an Australian one, and Amex costs more on Shopify Payments. For a small store the mix matters more than the rate on the pricing page.
- **The fee a platform adds.** A Shopify store paying through PayPal or eway also pays Shopify's own fee on every order, from 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus. The month adds it.
- **The price that covers the fee.** With surcharges banned, a fee comes out of your margin unless the price carries it. The last column of the payment table is that price: the amount plus the fixed fee, divided by one minus the rate.
- **Nothing you type leaves your browser.** The sums run on your device. There is no sign-up, and nothing you enter is sent to us or kept.

## Ask away.

Seven things people ask about payment fees and this calculator. Still one missing? [Ask us](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/contact/).

- **How much is the PayPal fee for $1,000?** $29.30 through PayPal Checkout in Australia, at 2.9% plus 30 cents for a sale, so $970.70 reaches you. A buyer outside Australia costs $39.30 at 3.9% plus 30 cents, and a payment in another currency adds PayPal's conversion fee on top. To be left with the whole $1,000 after the fee, the sale has to be $1,030.18.
- **How much should I charge to cover the PayPal fee?** $103.30 to keep $100 after PayPal Checkout's 2.9% plus 30 cents: add the 30 cents to what you want to keep, then divide by 0.971, the share the 2.9% leaves. Through PayPal's own card processing, 1.5% plus 30 cents once PayPal approves it, the price is $101.83, and the calculator does the sum for all nine providers. Since October 2026 that has to be your price for everyone, not a fee added when someone pays by PayPal or card.
- **How are payment processing fees calculated?** As a percentage of the payment plus a fixed fee: Stripe takes 1.65% of an $80 sale, $1.32, plus 30 cents, so $1.62. The fixed part is why small sales cost more as a share, since 30 cents is 0.375% of $80 but 3% of $10. Every provider charges a higher percentage on a card issued overseas, and Shopify Payments also charges more for American Express.
- **Can I add the card fee to the customer's bill?** Not as a surcharge: eftpos, Mastercard, Visa, American Express, UnionPay, JCB and PayPal have all banned surcharges since early October 2026, online and in shops. You can still build the fee into your prices, which is what the calculator's last column works out, and our [payment fees guide](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/payment-fees-in-australia/) covers what else the ban changed.
- **Do the calculator's rates include GST?** Five of the nine include it, because the calculator shows each rate as published: Stripe, Shopify Payments, eway, Airwallex and Pin Payments say their fees include GST. WooPayments adds GST to its fee for a store with no GST registration, and Square and PayPal do not say either way. Shopify's plan prices in the month exclude GST, which Shopify charges on top unless you have given it a GST-registered ABN.
- **What does the calculator leave out?** Disputes, currency conversion, refunds and sales in person. A chargeback costs $15 to $44 depending on the provider, converting a currency adds about 2% at Shopify and Stripe, and a refund returns none of the fee. Providers that need a bank's approval, such as Westpac and NAB, and buy now, pay later services such as Afterpay are left out too; the [payment fees guide](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/payment-fees-in-australia/) prices them.
- **Is what I type stored anywhere?** No. The calculator runs in your browser, so the amounts you put in are never sent to us or kept, and there is no account to make or email to give. Our analytics count that the calculator was used and which part, one payment or a month, but never what was typed. Close the tab and it is gone.

## Is your bill bigger than this?

Apps, the wrong plan or a provider Shopify charges extra for usually explain the gap. Two lines about the store is enough, and a person replies within a business day.
