# What does Shopify charge in Australia?

https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/shopify-fees-in-australia/

Shopify costs $56 a month on Basic in Australia plus GST, and takes 1.7% + 30c of a card sale. Every plan, rate and hidden fee, with a calculator.

## What does Shopify charge in Australia?

Five charges, and for a store that sells, the plan is usually the smallest of them. $56 a month on Basic, 1.7% plus 30 cents on every domestic card sale, more on Amex and overseas cards, 2% of every order if payments go through anyone but Shopify, and the apps, priced in US dollars. Every fee as at 11 October 2026, and a calculator for your own numbers.

**Quick answer**

- **Basic plan** $56 a month, $42 yearly
- **Card rate** 1.7% + 30c
- **Amex** 2.9% + 30c
- **Overseas cards** 3.5% + 30c
- **Other gateways** +2% of each order
- **GST** +10% on the plan

Shopify's AUD prices, read on 11 October 2026. Plan prices exclude GST.

## $56 a month, 1.7% of every card sale, and the apps.

Shopify's Basic plan costs $56 a month in Australia, or $42 a month paid a year upfront, plus 10% GST unless the store is registered for GST and has its ABN on the account. Every online sale through Shopify Payments then costs 1.7% plus 30 cents on an Australian Visa or Mastercard, 2.9% plus 30 cents on American Express and 3.5% plus 30 cents on a card issued overseas, so Shopify keeps $2.00 of a $100 order. Grow, at $149, takes 0.15 points less per sale, which pays for itself only above about $62,000 a month in domestic card sales; Advanced, at $575, takes 0.2 points less again and pays above about $213,000. Take payments through PayPal, Afterpay or any provider other than Shopify Payments and Shopify adds 2% of every order on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of the provider's own fee. The line most budgets miss is the apps and the theme, priced in US dollars: most common apps are free to start and US$15 to US$50 a month on their first paid plan, a paid theme is US$100 to US$500 once, and Shopify adds 1.5% to convert them on an Australian-dollar bill.

## Work out your monthly bill.

Your plan, how you take payments, your orders and your average sale. The bill comes out line by line, and the same store is priced on every other way of taking payments underneath, so you can see what a switch would save before you make it.

Worked example: 200 orders a month at $80 on Shopify Basic billed monthly, 10% of orders on overseas cards, 5% on American Express and $60 a month of apps. With Shopify Payments, the month comes to $486 ($5,837 a year), and payments take 2.31% of sales.

| Payments by | Card fees | Shopify's extra fee | Payments a month | Share of sales |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Shopify Payments | $370 | $0 | $370 | 2.31% |
| eway Online Payments | $322 | $320 | $642 | 4.01% |
| PayPal Checkout | $540 | $320 | $860 | 5.38% |

The plan price excludes GST: Shopify adds 10% unless you are registered for GST with your ABN on the account. Card rates are shown as each provider publishes them, GST included for Shopify Payments and eway. A Shopify store in Australia can add PayPal or eway beside Shopify Payments, but not Stripe.

Rates read from each provider's Australian page on 11 October 2026. Card fees only: chargebacks, currency conversion and eway's program fee are left out, and refunds return none of these fees.

## What each plan costs, and when it pays.

Shopify's Australian prices on 11 October 2026, in Australian dollars and excluding GST. Paying yearly takes 25% off and is charged upfront.

- **Basic · $42 billed yearly** $56 The full online store, checkout and payments, with up to 10 inventory locations and no staff accounts beyond the owner's. — You are starting out, or selling under about $62,000 a month on Australian cards.
- **Grow · $114 billed yearly** $149 Five staff accounts, more reporting, and card rates 0.15 points lower, at 1.55% plus 30 cents. — Domestic card sales pass about $62,000 a month, or $48,000 on yearly billing, or the team needs logins of its own.
- **Advanced · $431 billed yearly** $575 Fifteen staff accounts, custom reports, payouts in other currencies, and card rates down to 1.35% plus 30 cents. — Card sales pass about $213,000 a month, or $158,500 on yearly billing.
- **[Plus · 3-year term, $4,000 on a 1-year term](https://www.shopify.com/au/plus/pricing)** from $3,700 Checkout customisation, a main store and nine expansion stores ($500 a month for each one after that), and rates from 1.15% plus 30 cents. Larger businesses move to a variable platform fee that Shopify quotes privately. — Enterprise volume, several brands or regions, or a checkout that has to do something a standard one cannot.

Prices from [shopify.com/au/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/au/pricing), read on 11 October 2026. The break-even figures are our arithmetic: the plan's extra monthly cost divided by its lower domestic card rate. Starter and Retail are no longer sold to new stores.

From [shopify.com/au/pricing](https://www.shopify.com/au/pricing), read on 11 October 2026. On 15 September 2026 the same page showed 1.75%, 1.6%, 1.4% and 1.2% online and 1.95%, 1.85%, 1.75% and 1.55% in person; Amex, overseas and third-party rates did not move. Shopify's Australian card fees include GST.

## Every other fee Shopify can charge.

The charges that come with a choice you make, a payment provider, another currency, a dispute, a shop counter. Australian dollars unless Shopify prices them in US dollars.

- **[Third-party transaction fee](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/third-party-charges/third-party-transaction-fees)** 2% · 1% · 0.6% On every order paid through a provider other than Shopify Payments, on Basic, Grow and Advanced, worked out on the total including GST and shipping, and never refunded. Afterpay, Zip and Klarna orders attract it, and on stores opened since 12 May 2025 so do gift cards and store credit. — Make Shopify Payments your main provider. PayPal orders are then exempt, and so are manual methods such as bank transfer.
- **Mixed-gateway premium** +1.25% When another provider is your main card gateway, whatever Shopify Payments still processes, such as Shop Pay, costs its standard rate plus 1.25%. — Pick one gateway for cards and let it carry everything it can.
- **[Currency conversion](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/store-currency/currency-conversion-calculation)** 2% When a customer pays in another currency. Since 6 April 2026 it is charged on the gross order, not on what is left after fees, and Shopify adds it to the price the customer sees. — Sell in Australian dollars only, or treat it as the cost of selling overseas.
- **Chargeback** $25 When a cardholder disputes a payment through their bank. The disputed amount and the fee are withdrawn at once and both come back if you win. — Ship with tracking, answer customers quickly, and make sure your store name is recognisable on a card statement.
- **[GST on the Shopify bill](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/billing-charges/types-of-charges/taxes/billing-taxes-australia-new-zealand)** 10% Added to the plan and shipping labels unless the store is GST-registered with its ABN on the account, from the next invoice on. — Register for GST and add your ABN under Settings, then Billing.
- **[Exchange on US-dollar charges](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/your-account/manage-billing/paying-your-bills/managing-payments/local-currency)** 1.5% Apps, themes, domains, POS subscriptions and shipping labels are priced in US dollars. On an Australian-dollar bill each one is converted at the day's rate plus 1.5%. — There is no way round it on an AUD bill; count apps in US dollars when you budget.
- **POS Pro, per location** $129 Staff roles, stock tools and reporting for a shop counter, billed yearly. Casual selling in person is included in every plan without it. — Stay on the free point of sale until there is staff on the counter.

From Shopify's Help Center and [pricing page](https://www.shopify.com/au/pricing), read on 11 October 2026. Not available to Australian stores at all: Shop Pay Installments, Managed Markets, and PayTo through Shopify Payments.

## One real store's Shopify bill.

Made Quiet sells premium Australian sports caps from a headless storefront we built in January 2026. Shopify holds the products, the cart, the checkout and the payments; every page a customer sees is served from Cloudflare. This is what the store costs each month before a cap is sold, and what each sale costs after.

- **Client** New brand, first store
- **Plan** Shopify Basic, billed monthly
- **Payments** Shopify Payments only
- **Storefront** Headless, on Cloudflare Workers

- **Shopify Basic** A$56 the plan, before GST
- **Apps** $0 none paid. Reviews, email capture and content sit in free tiers
- **Storefront hosting** $0 Cloudflare Workers, on their own account
- **Total before a sale** A$56 a month, ex GST

**Then, on each $100 order**

- **Australian card** $2.00 1.7% + 30c
- **American Express** $3.20 2.9% + 30c
- **Card issued overseas** $3.80 3.5% + 30c

No third-party fee, because every payment goes through Shopify Payments.

Published with Made Quiet's permission. Excludes GST. Card rates as at 11 October 2026.

The app line is $0 because the storefront does the jobs a theme hands to apps. Reviews come from Judge.me's free plan, email capture from Klaviyo's, content from Sanity's, and the rest is built in. The build itself, $12,000, is itemised in our [Shopify store cost guide](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/how-much-does-a-shopify-store-cost-in-australia/).

## Who builds Shopify stores in Australia, and what to ask them.

- **Every monthly charge, in writing.** The plan, each app with its US-dollar price, the theme, and hosting. A quote that prices only the build hides the bill you pay for years.
- **Shopify Payments, or why not.** If the store will take cards through another provider, ask what the 2% third-party fee comes to at your monthly sales.
- **Which plan, and the sales figure that changes it.** Grow pays above about $62,000 a month in domestic card sales. Anyone who recommends it for a new store should say why.
- **Whose name is on the accounts.** The Shopify store, the app subscriptions and the domain should be in your name and on your card, with the builder invited as staff.
- **What happens when an app is removed.** Apps leave code and scripts behind. Ask who cleans up, and whether the theme still works without it.
- **We do.** Croissant & Baguette is a small Sydney studio with a network of Australian specialists, and a Shopify Partner. Made Quiet runs on Basic with no paid apps because the storefront does that work. — Built in Sydney, never offshored.

## What we charge.

**Why we price the monthly bill too** Because a cheap build that leans on six apps costs more within two years than a dearer one that does the work itself. Ask any builder, us included, for the plan, the apps and the hosting the store will need each month, so you compare what the store costs to own, not only what it costs to launch.

- **Headless storefront** from $12,000 (Shopify checkout, storefront built by us)
- **Custom Shopify theme** from $9,000 (built from a clean base, not a marketplace theme)
- **Care plan** from $250/month (monitoring, updates, small changes, monthly performance snapshot)

What moves our price within those ranges:

- how much of what the apps do now moves into the build itself
- the catalogue, the variants, and how clean the product data is
- payments beyond a single checkout, such as subscriptions, wholesale or bookings
- more than one market, currency or language
- a move from WooCommerce or another platform, with every old address redirected

Fixed quote after a scoping call. Shopify's plan and card fees go to Shopify, not to us.

## Ask away.

Seven things people ask about Shopify's fees. Still one missing? [Ask us](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/contact/).

- **How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?** $2.00 on the Basic plan in Australia: 1.7% plus 30 cents on an Australian Visa or Mastercard through Shopify Payments, as at 11 October 2026. Grow takes $1.85 and Advanced $1.65. An American Express card costs $3.20 on Basic and a card issued overseas $3.80. Take the payment through another provider and Shopify adds $2.00 more on Basic, on top of that provider's own fee.
- **Do Shopify fees in Australia include GST?** Not the plan, yes the card fees. The $56, $149 and $575 plan prices exclude GST, and Shopify adds 10% unless the store is registered for GST and has its ABN on the account, from the next invoice onwards. Shopify Payments processing fees include GST whether or not you are registered, and Shopify's monthly tax invoice for them shows the GST you can claim back.
- **How do I avoid Shopify transaction fees?** Make Shopify Payments your main payment provider, which removes the 2% Shopify charges on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced for taking payments through anyone else. With Shopify Payments on, PayPal orders are exempt too, and so are manual methods such as bank transfer. Afterpay, Zip and Klarna orders still attract the fee, and on stores opened since 12 May 2025 so do gift cards and store credit.
- **When is Grow cheaper than Basic?** When domestic card sales pass about $62,000 a month, or $48,000 on yearly billing. Grow costs $93 a month more than Basic and takes 0.15 points less from each sale, so the saving covers the difference at that volume. On a third-party gateway the break-even falls to about $9,300 a month, because Grow halves Shopify's extra fee from 2% to 1%. Staff accounts are the other reason to move.
- **Can I add a card surcharge on Shopify?** Not on almost any card since October 2026. eftpos, Mastercard and Visa banned surcharges from 1 October, online as well as in shops, once the Reserve Bank lifted the rule that had stopped them, and the other card networks and PayPal followed within days. Shopify never had a surcharge setting, so stores that surcharged used fee apps, which now have to come off. What is left is in our guide to [payment fees and the surcharge ban](https://croissantbaguette.com.au/guides/payment-fees-in-australia/).
- **Is the Starter plan still available in Australia?** No. Shopify no longer sells Starter, which was $7 a month, or Retail, at $129, to new stores, although many guides still list them. The cheapest way to run an online store is now Basic at $56 a month, after three free days and three months at $1 a month on most plans. The Agentic plan costs nothing a month but sells only through AI channels and cannot publish a store.
- **Why are my Shopify apps charged in US dollars?** Because nearly every app on the Shopify App Store is priced in US dollars, and so are themes and domains. On an Australian-dollar bill Shopify converts each of those charges at the day's rate plus a 1.5% exchange fee; the plan itself is priced in AUD and is not converted. Apps that bill you directly, as Klaviyo and Recharge can, charge in their own currency and on their own tax terms.
